SF Giants add a pair of pitchers to roster, Phillies place eight in COVID protocol ahead of series

The Giants called in reinforcements for a tired bullpen on Monday as the club added lefty Sam Selman and righty Trevor Gott to the active roster ahead of a three-game set against the Phillies.

To clear space for the relievers, the Giants optioned outfielder Steven Duggar and catcher Chadwick Tromp to the alternate site, but both players will remain with the club on the taxi squad in Philadelphia.

The pregame roster moves indicate catcher Buster Posey will be available off the bench after he was diagnosed with a left elbow contusion following Saturday’s game. Giants manager Gabe Kapler said earlier Monday that Posey was still being evaluated, but the Giants likely wouldn’t have optioned Tromp if Posey was unavailable to provide backup for Curt Casali.

The Phillies made several transactions prior to the start of Monday’s series, placing three players and five assistant coaches were in COVID-19 protocol. The three players –infielder Ronald Torreyes and pitchers Jose Alvarado and Matt Moore — won’t be available Monday, but it’s unclear if they’ll miss the entire series. Moore, a former Giants left-hander, isn’t scheduled to start again until Friday against the Rockies.

Philadelphia added pitchers Cristopher Sanchez and Damon Jones as well as infielder Nick Maton to their 26-man roster, even though no member of the trio has ever appeared in a major league game.
