‘The last thing we need’: Haas’ shock move leaves Broncos legend baffled

Broncos legend Justin Hodges has revealed he was surprised Payne Haas requested a release from the Red Hill club.

Haas’ management made a shock move by requesting an immediate release on Wednesday night, a move which has since been bluntly denied by Brisbane powerbrokers.

Hodges believes that the 22-year-old’s current $800,000-a-year deal a huge sum for a front rower, explaining the unrest is the last thing the club needs.

The Broncos are currently gunning for a sixth straight win, rising to fifth on the competition ladder.

Hodges, who played 193 games for the Broncos, is worried the move could disrupt the club’s strong start to the 2022 season.

“Yeah to be honest (I was surprised), I think everyone was, there were always rumours around that he wanted more money,” Hodges said on The Late Show with Matty Johns.

“Look he is getting paid a lot of money, $800,000 or whatever he is getting paid is a lot of money to play in the front row, yes he has been our best player the last couple of seasons but if you look at our team now, we are going really good.

“This is probably the last thing we need as a club, he is the main front rower, he is the one that everyone looks to and it is a little bit upsetting.

“When you see a guy like that and the club has done so much for him, to come at a time where… we are on a bit of a roll, considering where we have come from over the last couple of years, it will be a shame to lose someone like that.

“But at the end of the day the club is always going to be bigger than any player.”

Matty Johns suggested the club could cut ties with Haas, freeing up a large amount of cap space to go after a free agent.

As it stands, Haas could command more than $1 million on the open market, and his management are seeking a $1 million contract for this season with an upgrade to $1.2 million in 2024.

“It is almost like if you are the Broncos go; well we knew this was coming, he has asked for a release, we seem like we are going on a different direction now, there is a lot of good guys coming through and there is a number of good players, people like Cameron Munster off-contract soon,” Johns said.

“Maybe we cut our losses and let him go.”
