AFL ROUND 9 FIXTURE (All times AEST)

COLLINGWOOD v WESTERN BULLDOGS

Friday, May 13, 7:50pm at Marvel Stadium

Magpies’ Round 8 team

B: I.Quaynor, D.Moore, S.Pendlebury

HB: B.Maynard, J.Howe, J.Noble

C: S.Sidebottom, T.Adams, J.Daicos

HF: W.Hoskin-Elliott, J.Ginnivan, B.Mihocek

F: P.Lipinski, J.De Goey, O.Henry

FOLL: D.Cameron, T.Brown, J.Crisp

I/C: A.Begg, N.Daicos, B.McCreery, T.Bianco

EMG: C.Poulter, J.Madgen (sub), M.Cox, C.Brown

Team tips: Isaac Quaynor will play against the Bulldogs despite dislocating his finger in the loss to Richmond. The Pies might be tempted to give Aiden Begg a run in the VFL, but coach Craig McRae did indicate recently he was keen for Mason Cox to find some form at VFL level first. Finlay Macrae, Caleb Poulter and Liam McMahon are still pushing for senior selection after consistent performances in the VFL.

“You can all go and get f**ked!” | 03:18

Bulldogs’ Round 8 team

B: E.Richards, R.Gardner, T.Duryea

HB: C.Daniel, T.O’Brien, B.Dale

C: L.McNeil, B.Smith, A.Scott, R.Smith

HF: L.Vandermeer, B.Khamis, C.Weightman

F: T.Liberatore, A.Naughton, R.McComb

FOLL: S.Martin, J.Dunkley, A.Treloar

I/C: J.Macrae, B.Williams, Z.Cordy, R.Smith

EMG: H.Crozier (sub), R.West, L.Cleary, J.Sweet

Team tips: Skipper Marcus Bontempelli, defender Alex Keath and ruckman Tim English are all in the running to return on Friday night. Bontempelli told reporters on Monday he was planning to return to the side after an ankle injury — and a five-day break turnaround — saw him left out of the Bulldogs side that faced Port Adelaide last round. The trio’s potential returns come at a great time for the club, given they lost Cody Weightman (broken collarbone), Laitham Vandermeer (hamstring) and Tim O’Brien (calf) all to injury in Round 8. There were a few quiet performers for the Dogs against the Power, so Rhylee West — who had 26 disposals in his most recent VFL outing — would be in the mix for a re-call.

HAWTHORN v RICHMOND

Saturday, May 14, 1:45pm at MCG

Hawks’ Round 8 team

B: J.Scrimshaw, S.Frost, L.Bramble

HB: W.Day, J.Sicily, B.Hardwick

C: J.Impey, T.Mitchell, C.Macdonald

HF: F.Maginness, J.Koschitzke, D.Moore

F: J.O’Meara, J.Callow, L.Breust

FOLL: M.Lynch, J.Newcombe, J.Ward

I/C: J.Worpel, H.Morrison, J.Gunston, D.Grainger-Barras

EMG: D.Howe, C.Nash, C.Wingard, L.Shiels (sub)

Team tips: Chad Wingard should return after being a late withdrawal due to illness, while Liam Shiels remains in contention for an AFL recall as one of the Hawks’ best in the VFL. He racked up 29 disposals, five clearances and seven tackles. Furthermore, Changkuoth Jiath could make his return from a hamstring injury while Mitch Lewis could also prove himself fit. James Worpel was quiet against the Bombers with 15 disposals and could well find himself omitted yet again. Sam Mitchell will also be pondering how he balances blooding youth with staying competitive. The likes of Jackson Callow andfinlat Connor Macdonald (both 10 touches) were quiet against the Bombers and could also face the selection axe with reinforcements on the way.

Tigers’ Round 8 team

B: N.Balta, D.Grimes, J.Gibcus

HB: D.Rioli, N.Broad, L.Baker

C: K.McIntosh, J.Short, S.Edwards

HF: J.Castagna, K.Lambert, S.Bolton

F: T.Lynch, D.Martin, J.Riewoldt

FOLL: T.Nankervis, J.Graham, T.Cotchin

I/C: R.Mansell, M.Pickett, I.Soldo, M.Rioli

EMG: D.Prestia, R.Collier-Dawkins, N.Vlastuin, S.Stack (sub)

Team tips: Richmond won’t have Rhyan Mansell for the clash with Hawthorn after he was hit with a one-match ban. Nick Vlastuin and Dion Prestia should both return from illness, and the former likely would’ve come in for Mansell regardless. There’s plenty of other players putting their hand up for selection, with Jake Aarts, Matt Parker and Thomson Dow impressing in the VFL. But the Tigers are coming off arguably their biggest win of the season, so spots in the 22 are tight. Either Kamdyn McIntosh, Jason Castagna or Marlion Pickett might be the other player to make way for Prestia.

NORTH MELBOURNE v PORT ADELAIDE

Saturday, May 14, 2:10pm at Blundstone Arena

Kangaroos’ Round 8 team

B: K.Turner, A.Corr, J.Walker

HB: L.McDonald, B.McKay, La.Young

C: C.Taylor, L.Davies-Uniacke, B.Scott

HF: J.Stephenson, C.Zurhaar, T.Thomas

F: P.Curtis, J.Ziebell, J.Anderson

FOLL: T.Goldstein, J.Simpkin, J.Horne-Francis

I/C: A.Bosenavulagi, H.Greenwood, C.Coleman-Jones, F.Perez

EMG: J.Mahony (sub), T.Powell, K.Hayden, M.McGuinness

Team tips: David Noble wasn’t impressed with the effort of his players in Perth, so expect some changes looming. Nick Larkey will return from suspension, but Ben McKay won’t play for at least a month after injuring his MCL in a big blow. Tom Powell and Charlie Lazzaro are pushing for senior selection, while Charlie Comben was able to hit the scoreboard again in the VFL with two goals. The likes of Curtis Taylor, Paul Curtis and Atu Bosenavulagi are likely the most vulnerable of making way pending on how many changes they opt to make. Or could Noble make another bold selection statement and send Jaidyn Stephenson back to the VFL or even leadership group member Kayne Turner?

Front up! – King’s blunt message to Roos | 02:18

Power’s Round 8 team

B: R.Burton, A.Aliir, T.Clurey

HB: D.Houston, T.Jonas, D.Byrne-Jones

C: K.Amon, O.Wines, X.Duursma

HF: S.Motlop, T.Boak, S.Powell-Pepper

F: R.Gray, T.Marshall, M.Georgiades

FOLL: S.Hayes, Z.Butters, C.Rozee

I/C: W.Drew, J.Finlayson, T.Dumont, R.Bonner

EMG: K.Farrell, J.McEntee, L.Jones (Sub), O.Lord

Team tips: Charlie Dixon could play his first AFL game for the season after getting through his injury return in the SANFL, potentially leaving Ken Hinkley with a big selection dilemma of who to drop. It would surely have to be one of their key forwards, with Mitch Georgiades the most vulnerable as things stand. Orazio Fantasia could also make his first appearance for the club in 2022, if he can prove himself fit after off-season knee surgery. Kane Farrell can return after clearing his health and safety protocols stint, but Trent Dumont won’t face his former side after entering those same protocols. Miles Bergman is back training and up for selection, but the news isn’t as great for Riley Bonner who will miss with an ankle injury. Late inclusion Xavier Duursma had limited impact and could get forced out of the team again.

Dixon no certainty for Port return! | 01:24

ST KILDA v GEELONG CATS

Saturday, May 14, 4:35pm at Marvel Stadium

Saints’ Round 8 team

B: J.Webster, C.Wilkie, D.Howard

HB: D.McKenzie, J.Battle, J.Sinclair

C: N.Wanganeen-Milera, B.Crouch, B.Hill

HF: M.Wood, T.Membrey, D.Butler

F: R.Marshall, M.King, J.Gresham

FOLL: P.Ryder, S.Ross, J.Steele

I/C: B.Paton, B.Long, Z.Jones, J.Higgins

EMG: M.Windhager (sub), D.Joyce, R.Byrnes, T.Campbell

Team tips: Dan Butler is in some doubt to face Geelong on Saturday after being subbed out of his side’s loss to Melbourne with Achilles soreness. AFL Media reported Butler had been managing the issues throughout the season so far, but would face a fitness test later in the week. After a disappointing loss, the Saints will be tempted to make a host of changes, with Ben Long and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera arguably the most vulnerable. Will the Saints bring in Jack Billings for his first game? The left-footer kicked one goal from 30 touches in his best VFL outing yet for Sandringham. Hunter Clark also impressed in his VFL return from a shoulder issue, finishing with 28 touches playing as a mid-forward. Jarrod Lienert was dropped last weekend but responded in the VFL with 31 disposals, 22 kicks and eight marks. Cooper Sharman (2 goals, 17 touches), Tom Highmore (28 disposals), Tom Campbell (22 disposals, 36 hit-outs, 8 clearances) and Mitch Owens (32 disposals, 10 clearances) will all be considered.

Cats’ Round 8 team

B: Z.Tuohy, S.De Koning, J.Bews

HB: J.Kolodjashnij, T.Stewart, T.Atkins

C: M.Duncan, P.Dangerfield, C.Stephens

HF: I.Smith, J.Cameron, F.Evans

F: B.Close, T.Hawkins, T.Stengle

FOLL: M.Blicavs, Q.Narkle, C.Guthrie

I/C: B.Parfitt, M.O’Connor, Z.Guthrie, G.Miers

EMG: M.Knevitt (sub), O.Dempsey, S. Neale, R.Stanley

Team tips: Could be a few changes at the Cats. Joel Selwood and Shaun Higgins will need to get through training this week to return against the Saints. Jed Bews will miss with concussion, but Rhys Stanley is pushing hard for a re-call after being a late withdrawal from the win over GWS. Luke Dahlhaus did his best for an AFL recall with 25 touches, four clearances and three tackles in the midfield in the VFL. As for who goes out? Francis Evans appears most likely to make way — but debutants Cooper Stephens (19 disposals) and sub Mitch Knevitt (15) would be mighty stiff to miss out after impressing against the Giants.

“I call bulls**t on them not knowing” | 03:04

SYDNEY SWANS v ESSENDON

Saturday, May 14, 7:25pm at SCG

Swans’ Round 8 team

B: T.McCartin, D.Rampe, J.Lloyd

HB: N.Blakey, P.McCartin, J.McInerney

C: O.Florent, C.Mills, E.Gulden

HF: L.Parker, H.McLean, W.Hayward

F: T.Papley, L.Franklin, L.McDonald

FOLL: P.Ladhams, I.Heeney, J.Rowbottom

I/C: B.Campbell, J.Kennedy, C.Warner, B.Ronke

EMG: J.Bell, W.Gould, R.Clarke (sub), S.Reid

Team tips: Tom Hickey has made a successful return from his knee injury, managing 23 disposals, four marks, 26 hit-outs, six clearances and a goal in the VFL. If deemed fit to return against Essendon, Hickey might come straight in for Peter Ladhams, who did seem to cop a knock against the Suns. Or the Swans may consider dropping Hayden McLean — despite playing every game so far this season — after one goal from five touches. Harry Cunningham might be in the frame to return after missing last week with an abdominal injury. Elsewhere, Dylan Stephens is pushing for an AFL recall with 27 touches, five inside 50s in the VFL, as is Lewis Taylor (29 disposals, five clearances, one goal).

Swans ‘not a team you can rely on’ | 01:56

Bombers’ Round 8 team

B: J.Laverde, A.Francis, M.Redman

HB: N.Hind, B.Zerk-Thatcher, D.Heppell

C: D.Shiel, D.Parish, Z.Reid

HF: B.Ham, K.Baldwin, N.Martin

F: N.Bryan, P.Wright, A.Perkins

FOLL: S.Draper, Z.Merrett, A.McGrath

I/C: D.Smith, J.Caldwell, B.Hobbs, T.Cutler

EMG: A.Lord (sub), G.McDonagh, C.Brand, T.Hird

Team tips: Traditionally a team would be reluctant to change a winning line-up after a win like that from the Bombers. But five players were late withdrawals from the win over Hawthorn due to illness so some inclusions are likely. Jordan Ridley, Jake Kelly and Matt Guelfi, would be automatic inclusions, while Alec Waterman and Sam Durham would also be strong chances to return. Plus young gun Nik Cox will push his case this week to return from an ankle issue. Considering Devon Smith essentially came off the injury list to fill a hole on Saturday night, he’d be a likely contender to come out of the side. Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and Brayden Ham would also likely make way, but will Aaron Francis get another gig? He kicked two goals from five games. Might be only room for one of Francis and Zach Reid in the team.

ADELAIDE CROWS v BRISBANE LIONS

Saturday, May 14, 7:10pm at Adelaide Oval

Crows’ Round 8 team

B: C.Jones, J.Butts, L.Brown

HB: W.Hamill, T.Doedee, J.Dawson

C: M.Hinge, R.Laird, L.Sholl

HF: L.Murphy, E.Himmelberg, J.Hately

F: S.McAdam, T.Walker, J.Rachele

FOLL: R.O’Brien, B.Keays, S.Berry

I/C: H.Schoenberg, L.Gollant, B.Cook, B.Frampton

EMG: B.Davis, J.Soligo, L.Pedlar, J.Rowe (sub)

Team tips: Coach Matthew Nicks could make a host of changes of Saturday night’s match given the lacklustre effort of the Crows in Round 8. They could make a forced change, with forward Lachlan Murphy will be assessed this week after he was subbed out with neck soreness in the third quarter. Elsewhere Lachlan Sholl had 15 touches, while Brayden Cook had eight but was one of Adelaide’s highest-rated players. The Crows could regain duo Brodie Smith and Ned McHenry from concussion protocols, but they’ll be assessed this week. Matt Crouch responded to his shock axing in the best possible way – with 36 disposals in the SANFL. Darcy Fogarty finished his day in the SANFL with two goals and would be an option.

Lions’ Round 8 team

B: R.Lester, J.Payne, M.Adams

HB: B.Starcevich, D.Rich, D.Zorko

C: N.Answerth, J.Berry, H.McCluggage

HF: D.Fort, D.McStay, L.McCarthy

F: C.Rayner, H.Andrews, C.Cameron

FOLL: O.McInerney, J.Lyons, L.Neale

I/C: C.Ah Chee, K.Coleman, J.Prior, Z.Bailey

EMG: D.Robertson, M.Robinson, T.Fullarton, T.Berry (sub)

Team tips: With Dan McStay sidelined for up to a month, Brisbane could be set to rush Eric Hipwood straight back into the AFL line up. Hipwood hasn’t played an AFL game since July 2021 after suffering a serious knee injury. Joe Daniher is still sidelined with his shoulder complaint, leaving the Lions essentially two big forwards short for the clash with Adelaide, unless Hipwood makes the step up into the AFL. if they don’t go for Hipwood, Tom Fullarton could get another chance at AFL level. Darcy Gardiner should return health and safety protocols. Mitch Robinson is on the brink of an AFL return with 31 touches and three goals in the VFL. While Rhys Mathieson did his recall chances no harm with a game-high 39 disposals.

GOLD COAST SUNS v FREMANTLE

Sunday, May 15, 1:40pm at Metricon Stadium

Suns’ Round 8 team

B: R.Thompson, S.Collins, S.Lemmens

HB: L.Weller, C.Ballard, J.Farrar

C: D.Swallow, T.Miller, B.Ellis

HF: B.Ainsworth, L.Casboult, M.Rosas

F: J.Lukosius, M.Chol, N.Holman

FOLL: J.Witts, M.Rowell, N.Anderson

I/C: C.Budarick, B.Fiorini, W.Powell, I.Rankine

EMG: R.Atkins, A.Davies, D.Macpherson (sub), O.Markov

Team tips: The big watch here is on Jack Lukosius after he was subbed out of the Suns’ 14-point upset win over Sydney with a knee injury. But Noah Anderson, who was a late out against Sydney with an illness, likely takes Lukosius’ spot if he doesn’t get up. There were several promising performances at VFL level from Sam Flanders (29 touches, seven tackles), Charlie Constable (32 touches), Elijah Hollands (27 possessions), Jack Bowes (28 disposals) and Sam Day (three goals), but Stuart Dew would be disinclined to make too many changes coming off arguably the Suns’ best win of the year. Malcolm Rosas and Alex Davies could be the unlucky ones to come out of the team.

The time Touk stood up to Tom Lynch | 02:06

Dockers’ Round 8 team

B: H.Young, A.Pearce, H.Chapman

HB: B.Cox, L.Ryan, J.Clark

C: N.O’Driscoll, A.Brayshaw, B.Walker

HF: M.Walters, J.Treacy, L.Schultz

F: L.Henry, J.Amiss, S.Switkowski

FOLL: S.Darcy, W.Brodie, C.Serong

I/C: D.Tucker, D.Mundy, J.Aish, B.Banfield

EMG: N.Erasmus (sub), S.Sturt, N.Wilson, E.Hughes

Team tips: Blake Acres, Griffin Logue, Lloyd Meek, Michael Frederick, Rory Lobb and Travis Colyer should all be eligible to return from health and safety protocols. But who comes out of a team that smashed the Kangaroos by 78 points? Meek probably stays out of the side after Sean Darcy’sreturn last week, so too Colyer. Sam Switkowski suffered a head knock in the game, and if he fails a concussion test, will miss this weekend. Liam Henry, Darcy Tucker and Brandon Walker were all relatively quiet against the Roos and could alsomake way, while Jye Amiss surely holds his spot after booting two goals on debut.

GWS GIANTS v CARLTON

Sunday, May 15, 3:20pm at GIANTS Stadium

Giants’ Round 8 team

B: L.Keeffe, S.Taylor, I.Cumming

HB: A.Kennedy, N.Haynes, H.Perryman

C: L.Whitfield, C.Ward, L.Ash

HF: T.Taranto, H.Himmelberg, S.Coniglio

F: B.Hill, J.Hogan, T.Greene

FOLL: B.Preuss, J.Kelly, T.Green

I/C: M.Flynn, C.Hamilton, C.Idun, F.Callaghan

EMG: M.de Boer (sub), J.Brander, J.Riccardi, J.Fahey

Team tips: The Giants could be tempted to re-call Matt de Boer into the 22 to try and slow down the red-hot Patrick Cripps in a run-with role. Leon Cameron may also turn to Jarrod Brander and Jake Riccardi for more fire power in attack after the Giants kicked just four goals against the Cats. It could come at the expense of Matt Flynn, who’shas had limited impact in the back-up role. Cooper Hamilton was also quiet against the Cats and thus could make way. The Giants’ VFL side had a bye, so there’s no obvious reinforcements putting their hands up, but the likes of Tanner Bruhn, Connor Stone and Xavier O’Halloran will be in the mix.

Blues’ Round 8 team

B: Z.Williams, J.Weitering, N.Newman

HB: A.Saad, Le.Young, S.Docherty

C: L.O’Brien, P.Cripps, J.Carroll

HF: Z.Fisher, C.Curnow, J.Martin

F: M.Owies, H.McKay, C.Durdin

FOLL: T.De Koning, S.Walsh, A.Cerra

I/C: J.Silvagni, M.Kennedy, J.Boyd, J.Newnes

EMG: M.Cottrell (sub), L.Plowman, J.Motlop, P.Dow

Team tips: The Blues could lose Jack Martin to injury this week after he was subbed out of the team’s win over Adelaide with calf tightness. If George Hewett is ready to return from a corked calf, he could take Martin‘s spot. Elsewhere, Liam Stocker is free to return from suspension, while Lachie Plowman was a late out with illness and should reclaim his spot from Jordan Boyd. Paddy Dow continues to bang the door down at VFL level with 33 disposals and two goals. Could it finally be the week the former Pick 3 makes his season debut? Lachie Fogarty was also big in the twos with 27 touches, 12 tackles and a goal. If either gets the call up, Jack Carroll or Matt Owies likely come out. Caleb Marchbank also impressed in his VFL return with 20 touches in three quarters, but will likely continue to build up form and match fitness in the seconds.

No suspension: Cripps free to play | 00:26

WEST COAST EAGLES v MELBOURNE

Sunday, May 15, 5.20pm at Optus Stadium

Eagles’ Round 8 team

B: J.Rotham, T.Barrass, S.Hurn

HB: L.Foley, J.McGovern, L.Duggan

C: C.West, T.Kelly, S.Petrevski-Seton

HF: J.Jones, J.Darling, J.Cripps

F: J.Waterman, J.Kennedy, L.Ryan

FOLL: H.Edwards, J.Redden, A.Gaff

I/C: I.Winder, P.Naish, C.Jamieson, J Florenca

EMG: H.Dixon, D.Mountford (sub), A.Schumacher, L.Young

Team tips: Trying to pick who comes in and out of West Coast’s side is like throwing a dart at a dartboard. Adam Simpson suggested on Monday the club shouldn’t have to dip into the Covid contingency list. He said All-Australian midfielder Elliot Yeo was a chance to return from concussion but it has since been revealed he has entered health and safety protocols, while skipper Luke Shuey would be a chance to return too considering he missed the Lions clash with hamstring awareness. Bailey Williams should play after missing with a minor hamstring issue. Alex Witherden and Greg Clark should come straight back into the team, while Luke Strnadica, Jackson Nelson and Hugh Dixon will also be available for selection.

The ‘nightclub seven’ FINED – AFL 360 | 04:30

Demons’ Round 8 team

B: J.Bowey, S.May, J.Lever

HB: T.Rivers, H.Petty, J.Hunt

C: A.Brayshaw, C.Petracca, E.Langdon

HF: B.Fritsch, T.McDonald, J.Viney

F: C.Spargo, B.Brown, J.Jordon

FOLL: M.Gawn, C.Oliver, J.Harmes

I/C: L.Jackson, A.Neal-Bullen, T.Sparrow, K.Pickett

EMG: T.Bedford (sub), B.Laurie, S.Weideman, L.Dunstan

Team tips: Could the Demons leave a few stars in Melbourne this weekend? Max Gawn is in some doubt for the trip west after undergoing scans on his knee, while fellow All-Australian Jake Lever has a corked leg. Gawn, in particular, will be closely monitored by Melbourne’s medical staff. If Gawn misses, expect Sam Weideman to return and play back-up ruck to Luke Jackson, while Adam Tomlinson would be the clear replacement for Lever. Kade Chandler (27 disposals) and Luke Dunstan (18) both had strong VFL outings to put themselves in the selection mix.
