Classic Eddie! AFL great Betts kicks bag, flies for near-screamer in country footy cameo

Safe to say Eddie Betts can still draw a crowd.

The Carlton and Adelaide champion made an electric cameo in country footy on Sunday, lining up for the Branxholme-Wallacedale Saints against Cavendish.

Betts was the headline act at Branxholme Recreation Reserve as The Carlton Draft series, which sees eight AFL legends drafted to play games for local footy clubs around Victoria, continued.

In a town 320kms west of Melbourne – 20 minutes south of Hamilton – that only has a population of 350-odd, a massive 4,000 fans flocked to watch Betts’ magic.

And he gave them plenty to celebrate, snapping a goal in the opening minute before adding another five minutes later to give the Saints an early two-goal lead.

A third major saw the home fans thrilled before Cavendish hit back with five in a row to lead at quarter-time – a lead they would never relinquish.

Betts ended up scoring 6.3, the overwhelming majority of the Saints’ 8.5 (53), to Cavendish’s 14.11 (95).

“I’m a bit sore – I tripped over some weeds on the field, actually,” he explained on Fox Footy’s Bounce.

You’ll be able to watch highlights of Betts’ The Carlton Draft performance in a five-minute mini documentary that’ll premiere at 8.30pm AEST on Fox Footy on Wednesday night, right after AFL 360.

Dale Thomas is the next AFL legend to lace up the boots again, as he’ll line-up for the Nhill Tigers against the Southern Mallee Giants on Saturday June 4.
