Queensland’s hopes of squaring the Origin series could be dealt a massive blow with star fullback Valentine Holmes in hot water for a shoulder charge against the Sea Eagles.
In the 40th minute of the Cowboys’ clash with Manly Holmes attempted a tackle on try-scorer
Haumole Olakau’atu, but the bunker placed him on report after replays appeared to show a shoulder charge that collected the Manly back-rower high.
“Valentine Holmes may well have an issue which could impact his availability for Origin II,” Warren Smith said on Fox League.

“Off the back of the final try of the first half coming across and trying to make a stop on Haumole Olakau’atu.
“There is no question he makes contact with the head of Olakau’atu. That was seen by the bunker as they reviewed the try.
“Valentine Holmes has been placed on report and given the NRL crackdown since Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium I think that action there given the contact we saw, I think Holmes has a pretty big issue.”

Steve Roach believes the fact Holmes appeared to not use his arms in the tackle means he will face an uphill battle to avoid a suspension.
“I think he is going to be in a little bit of trouble because he did make contact with the head,” Roach said.

“The big thing is that he didn’t even try to wrap his arms around to try and make a tackle.
“His shoulder hit him in the head, so I think Valentine Holmes will be in a little bit of bother.”
The Maroons already lost first string fullback Kalyn Ponga to a groin injury with the Knights star no certainty to be fit in time for Game II, while another fullback option in Titans ace AJ Brimson carried an injury into Game I.
The Queensland team for Game II, which takes place on Sunday June 27 is set to be announced after Round 15.
